Music Box Theatre FAQ

How much does it cost?

The admission price for Rocky Horror is $10.00
($12.00 for special shows a/o on line purchase for service charge).
We have no control over this.

What audience props are allowed in the Theater?

THERE ARE NO OUTSIDE PROPS ALLOWED IN THE THEATER. The Music Box is an old but very well kept theater - however, at that age maintenance is very costly and we are trying to minimize wear and tear or any potential for damage to this theater. The management is willing to allow props, but only controlled amounts. So the only props that will be allowed are in our own virgin kits. Remember, you don't have to buy a kit to enjoy the show any more than you would without. It's just a fun added feature to the Rocky Horror experience, and other people will still have them. We will not be allowing ANY outside props to be brought into the theater. Anything that is brought will be taken by us and returned to you at the end of the show. You can buy one of our Virgin Kits! You don't need to be a Virgin to buy a Virgin Kit. It contains just about everything you need to throw at Rocky. Best of all, since we are not for profit, all of the proceeds go back to cast costumes, props, promotions, giveaways, etc. - so it's like you're making a donation to the cast. IT'S ONLY $3.00.

Can I dress up / come in costume?

Hell YES! We encourage people to dress up and come to the show in costume year round (not just at Halloween, but we usually only have the costume contests at Halloween time). Dress as one of the characters from the movie, or from another movie (Ghostbusters, Clue, Shock Treatment, Star Wars, etc.), or just come in some fancy lingerie. Whatever you want to show off and show your personality and hard work.

Is there a security search?

As it has been with Midnight Madness from day one over 25 years ago, we do a bag/purse check and pat down search for weapons (guns, knives, mace, tazers, etc.), items that can be used as weapons (bats, batons, heavy flashlights, hair spray, electrically charged novelties, etc.) or unauthorized audience participation items (like food that spoils, rice, hot dogs, etc.) and booze/glass bottles. This is for the cast and audience security and safety. Any non illegal items will be taken possession of and returned to you after the show, or you have the option of returning them to your vehicle immediately. Any illegal items you will be asked to dispose of before you're allowed to enter the theater.

As far as other items that are not a danger to the cast/audience safety, like drugs and such, we're not cops and don't judge or care what you do with your body as long as you don't do it in the theater. Do note though, our show frequently has law enforcement officials in our audience so you're totally on your own if you do/have anything that'll get you arrested otherwise.

On that note, undercover or off duty / non uniformed law enforcement officials can refuse a search BUT will be required to show I.D stating such, and we'll take your name and I.D./badge number, inform theater management of your presence, and likely verify it if we suspect anything is off. DO NOT try to falsely pass yourself off as a law enforcement agent in order to bring weapons or unauthorized items into our show. We've been doing this a long time and you're not going to fool us and you'll find yourself talking to the REAL Chicago police faster than you can say "impersonation of an officer?"

People refusing door search can and likely will be denied admission to the theater and issued a refund. People ejected from the theater due to rules violation or causing trouble after the search point will not be issued a refund.

Where can I park?

The Music Box does not have a parking lot. There is a paid lot/valet south of the school across the street, but it's not always open or available, and it's a little pricey. Usually, around 11pm or so, as the businesses are closing and the shows are letting out of the Music Box and Mercury Theaters, street parking becomes available and is free. Most of the time you can get parking in under 10 minutes just doing a couple of circles around the neighborhood. There is almost always parking on Clark street north of Irving park if you're willing to walk about a half a mile - it's free and no snow/towing/zone restrictions. The Cubs usually don't have night games on Fridays or Saturdays, so there are no additional restrictions, however cars without neighborhood zone stickers have been ticketed if you park on the residential streets - you do that at your own risk. DO BE AWARE, parking is metered in the immediate vicinity of the Music Box and you must pay to park before 10pm or risk ticketing/booting/towing! Parking meter info is here.

What is there to do before the show?

There are many bars, bookstores, record stores and coffee shops in the neighborhood. We are about a mile northwest of Wrigley Field in one of the most bustling neighborhoods in the city.

Is it B.Y.O.B.?

No. Sorry, but there are no drugs or alcohol allowed in the theater, unless it's already in you when you get there. A tip, if you cause trouble we'll throw you out, and if you toss your cookies in the theater we promise "YOU WILL CLEAN IT UP!"
